In an infusion, bay rum is ideal for easing intestinal problems, and acts against rheumatism, contusions and headaches, as well as coughs, fever, colds and flu, and asthma. Its essential oil is highly regarded for its effects on the skin and hair and for easing pain.

The leaves contain an essential oil which, if distilled in rum, produce "bay rum," widely used in the West Indies as a rub to fight chills and particularly for sports massage.
