All about eggplant > Growing Eggplant

  • Family: Solanaceae (nightshade) family
  • Climate: Hot
  • Soil: Very moist
  • Sunshine: Yes
  • Height: 1 m
The domestication of the eggplant has allowed a variety to be developed that is much less bitter than the original varieties.

When it flowers, the eggplant becomes highly decorative, covered with beautiful purplish-blue flowers.

The fruit comes in various shapes, usually elongated, but ranging from the size of a nice oval egg to a big balloon with a pear shaped end. Its skin is smooth and shiny.

The flesh is cream-colored and studded with hundreds of little seeds.

Cultivation

Like most vegetables with a high water content, eggplants require frequent watering.
