The health benefits of mustard
Mustard, best known for its helpfulness with appetite stimulation and digestion, helps generate saliva. Mustard seeds contain no cholesterol and only small trace amounts of vegetable fat, making mustard a healthy choice when selecting a condiment. Mustard seeds are an excellent source of fibre, iron, magnesium, protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, phosphorus and selenium. The addition of selenium to a balanced diet has been proven to help reduce symptoms of asthma, arthritis and certain cancers.
The calorific value of mustard
The basic mustard base is composed of wine, vinegar, salt and mustard seeds. In most prepared mustards, calories are negligible. In Maille flavoured mustards, calories can slightly vary depending on the additional ingredients used in the production, such as fruit or a natural cheese. In terms of calorie count, one tablespoon of plain mustard usually contains approximately 10-15 calories, whereas one tablespoon of mayonnaise contains approximately 100 calories.
