At Cayenne in French Guyana, Joseph Auguste du Sel wrote in May 1789: "Fruit trees grow effortlessly: sapodillas, avocados, grapefruits, papayas, apricots, cinnamon trees, so-called 'egg yolk' plums, and the large tufts of pineapples. Women eat the latter with caution, since it is thought to make them sterile."

South America - Its spiky foliage was used to create protective hedges around villages and huts. These painful and unpleasant obstacles were used in the rites of passage from adolescence to adulthood, during which young men had to clear them with courage and stoicism.
