Properties of the Sap
Breadfruit - Properties of the Sap

Every part of the breadfruit tree produces a thick milky sap that is widely used in the pharmacology of the Hawaiian islands as well as for numerous everyday uses.

Antiseptic
applied directly to cuts, scrapes and skin irritations

As chewing gum

To caulk boats
formerly the sap was used to caulk canoes and as glue in construction

Emollient
to soothe skin chapped by sun and wind

As birdlime
to catch birds that came to gather nectar from breadfruit tree flowers, attracted by their brilliant colours; the feathers were then sewn onto chiefs' robes

Properties of the male flowers
The male flowers that fall, dried by the sun, can be burned. They give off a non-toxic smoke that is very effective in keeping away mosquitoes.
