The history of the sandwich
All about baked goods > Breads > The history of the sandwich
It all started in England in 1762 when John Montagu, Earl of Sandwich, Admiral of the Fleet and ardent gambler, was taking part in a card party in a pub. Since the earl could not tear himself away from the gaming table, the cook had the brilliant idea of serving him two slices of bread, between which were slices of cold meat and cheese. Montagu was able to continue playing without soiling his fingers. And thus was born the sandwich!
Today there are countless fillings for sandwiches, from cold meats and pâtés to fresh or grilled vegetables and delicious cheeses. No matter what form it takes, everybody loves a sandwich!
