All about French Wines > Wines from the South-West > Saint Mont

North of Madiran, the wine region of Saint-Mont received V.D.Q.S. status in 1981. It currently consists of 1 100 ha and produces 65 000 hl, of which 54 % is red, 25 % rosé and 21 % white. The appellation’s best ambassador is likely the Plaimont Cooperative, which also manages almost all of the production. The reds, made from tannat, fer servadou (known as Pinenc here), cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc are often fruity and lively; the whites made from courbu, arrufiac, petit and gros manseng are dry, aromatic and have a great quality/price ratio, as do the rosés.
