Banana shoots
Banana shoots, before they open up, are collected in Thailand to garnish salads and tamarind soup.
Banana shoots are usually sold canned in salted water. The end that holds the petals together is simply cut off and each shoot roughly frayed lengthwise. They should not be cut. Their flavour is unique and is used as a seasoning, with a taste reminiscent of heart of palm, though less refined.
