That’s what an international study led by Professor Tomoko Imai from Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts, Kyoto, Japan is suggesting. The study observed 136 countries and found that obesity rates in those countries that rely on rice as a primary food staple (average 150g/day/person) were considerably lower than countries where less rice is consumed (average 14g/day/person). Researchers believe that increasing rice consumption to a quarter cup per day could reduce worldwide obesity by 1 per cent.

According to Professor Imai, "Eating rice seems to protect against weight gain. It's possible that the fibre, nutrients, and plant compounds found in whole grains may increase feelings of fullness and prevent overeating."
