Flavors of the Vendée

This legume that dates back to the 16th century is closely linked to France's Vendée region, where it is a traditional crop.

Brought back from South America by explorers in the 16th century, these white beans were entrusted to the monks of the Vendée who skillfully managed to acclimate them and grow them, so that for many decades they were the daily fare of the peasants. There are even festivals devoted to the bean, such as "Mogette night" at Poiré sur Vie, that celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2006.

This large white shiny bean has a tender thin skin that bursts during cooking. They can be eaten plain, with butter, or as a side dish with ham, duck or lamb.
