Braised Broccoli - Tsjau jie jan Recipe

Ingredients
Ingredients for 4 servings
- 450 g (1 lb.) Broccoli
- 3 tbsp. peanut oil
- 1 medium onion
- 1/2 clove of garlic
- 1 tbsp. grated fresh ginger
- 2 tbsp. rice vinegar or sherry vinegar
- 2 tbsp. light soy sauce
- 1 tbsp. powdered sugar
- 1 tbsp. hoisin sauce
- 200 ml (3/4 cup) chicken broth
- 2 tbsp. sesame oil
- 1 tbsp. sesame seeds or a few cashews
Method
- clean the broccoli and cut the stalks into 1.25 cm (1/2") pieces; set aside the florets;
- heat the oil in a wok; sauté the garlic, sliced onion and ginger for 30 seconds;
- add the broccoli stems; cook over high heat for 3 minutes;
- add the florets and cook 2 minutes longer;
- add the broth, hoisin sauce and rice vinegar; sprinkle on the salt and sugar and cook for 5 minutes longer;
- transfer to a platter; add the sesame oil and toss;
- toast the sesame seeds for a few seconds in the hot wok; sprinkle over the broccoli and serve hot.
