Fruit scones

Ingredients
For 6 - 8 scones

- 1/2 stick/55g butter
- 2 cups /225g self raising flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 2-4 tbsp fine caster sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 150 ml milk
- 1/4 cup/ 50g currants or sultanas or chopped dates

Glaze
- 1 egg beaten with a little milk
Method
  1. Preheat the oven to 200° C (400° F). Grease a baking sheet.
  2. Rub together the flour, salt, baking powder, sugar and butter until crumbly. Add currants or sultanas or chopped dates. Add the milk.
  3. Turn the mixture on to a floured board and knead very lightly until you obtain workable dough.
  4. Roll the dough out to a thickness of 2 cm (3/4"). Using a 7.5 cm (3") cutter, cut the dough into discs.
  5. Place on the baking tray and brush with the beaten egg and milk mixture.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden and well risen.
  7. Remove from the oven and carefully transfer to a rack to cool. Serve hot or cold, with butter, or lashings of jam and cream.
