French: Pois gourmand or pois mange-tout
Sugar snap peas mark the arrival of spring with their sweet crunch and vivid green. The French "pois gourmand" and English "sugar snap" both evoke their their sensory appeal.
There are numerous varieties. Halfway between snow peas and shelling peas, sugar snap peas resemble small shelling peas, but the pods are eaten, as with snow peas. They are however much plumper than snow peas.
